Who We Are
We are residents of Huntington Woods, Michigan -- joined by friends and activisits in neighboring communities -- who are deeply troubled by our country's current foreign policy implemented in the shadow of 9/11. The reckless pursuit of war and aggression does not make us feel safer in our homes. In fact, it increases the threat of terrorism for all of us, and risks the lives of our young soldiers for ill-considered reasons.

War and violence are not family values. We do not wish to see our children learn from the current leadership of our own government that preemptive violence is an appropriate response to problems.

The wars and subsequent occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan are committing us to a lifetime of increased national debt. We want our tax dollars spent for the common good. Let's fund constructive programs to provide affordable health care, housing, clean and renewable energy, education and our children's future.

We join communities all over Michigan, all over the country and throughout the world in seeking rational solutions.

Mission Statement

We are residents of Huntington Woods and surrounding communities who came together in 2003 during the invasion of Iraq.  Our mission is to promote peace and justice both at home and abroad.  Our activities grew out of a belief that the war in Iraq was unnecessary, immoral, and illegal.  Although the U.S. government used the horrific attacks of 9/11 as justification, war and aggression are not the answer.

We need a different response to terrorism, a different way of protecting American citizens, and a different American role in the world. Peace and security require respecting international law and human rights, acknowledging the sovereignty of other nations, and transforming globalization into the worldwide pursuit of social and economic justice.  At home this means providing resources to make communities economically strong without exploiting the less- advantaged, and to allow all individuals the opportunity to fulfill their potential.

We are active citizens, pursuing these goals by knocking on doors, participating in marches and vigils, holding educational forums, circulating petitions, maintaining a website, and meeting with our elected officials.  We work in our own community, living out our belief that citizenship is as much about talking together locally as it is about federal and state elections.  To our families and our neighbors, we say: Peace is not an abstract concept to read about in the newspaper, but a tangible goal we can and must pursue in our daily lives.
